Cool U.S. Cities
I travel to many smaller cities for work, and Richmond was--surprisingly--one of my favorites.
First, it's walkable. From a hotel downtown or a B&B in "The Fan" you can get to lots of great historic sites and restaurants.
Second, Monument Avenue is the best urban boulevard in the US. Hands down. Way better than Commonwealth Ave. in Boston.
Third, you'll find hidden hip culture: art and furniture galleries and live music seem to predominate.
If you're into architectural history or the Civil War, spend a weekend in Richmond. It will surprise you.
