Bay Area Beer Lover's Tour

full description...
an open list started by David Good

Despite not having the same reputation as other regions for beer (the wine country gets all the press, it seems), the Bay Area has a great collection of brewpubs and beer-focused bars. Despite not having the same reputation as other regions for beer (the wine country gets all the press, it seems), the Bay Area has a great collection of brewpubs and beer-focused bars. I like wine just fine, but my personal loyalty will always be to beer, perhaps because I used to be a brewer. I guess I just like that I can get a $5 beer anywhere and be assured it will be reasonably good. Wine's often a $60 gamble. And even if it's not a gamble, it's still $60.

Jupiter
Jupiter brews their beer locally, but not on-site, so you lose the fun of seeing the kettles and fermenters (you can go down the street to Triple Rock if you want to see that). The back patio is great on a summer evening (although whenever they have a live band, it's more noise ...

Pyramid
Pyramid's great because it's got tons of space and offers brewery tours. The food's a little on the hoity-toity side, but I can live with that. I've never found Pyramid's beer to be that exceptional (I like hefe weizen fine, but I don't get excited about it, and putting lemon in it is just a marketing gimmick to get women to drink microbrews - putting fruit in ...

Magnolia
Supposedly a decent brewpub in the Haight, but I have yet to make it over there. For some reason, when I'm in the Haight I always end up someplace else. [www.magnoliapub.com]

Anchor
Anchor is a storied brewery that survived prohibition and the depression. A source of some frustration is that they've trademarked "steam beer" which is actually a category of beer, not a brand - it's like Budweiser trademarking "lager" or "pilsner." Regardless, Anchor has been brewing their trademark quality beers for longer than almost anyone else in the business, so they deserve their success. Tours available by res ...

21st Amendment Brewery
Worth going to just for the name, which is based on the Constitutional amendment that repealed prohibition. A great location near the ballpark (and a way better crowd than the nearby Momo's). [http://www.21st-amendment.com/ ]
Lucas A. diddit and says: Avoid before a ballgame, but otherwise this is where the beer snobs hang out. Whether that's good or bad depends on you. Solid food as well.

Triple Rock
Triple Rock seems to be pretty similar to Jupiter in its vibe, perhaps it's because all Berkeley bars tend to serve the same clientele. [www.triplerock.com]

Rogue is actually my favorite brewery, back from my Portland days. They actually have a proprietary yeast strain that I tried to harvest from a bottle and cultivate. It didn't really work. But that hasn't diminished my love of ...
