Hearst Castle (San Simion), Big Sur
This is the big-deal, money shot of attractions along PCH. Hearst Castle in San Simeon, is a surreal mansion with 165 palatial rooms built by eccentric billionaire William Randolph Hearst, where zebras—yes, zebras—roam the lands. It’s what Orson Welles based the Xanadu estate in Citizen Kane on. Booking a tour is highly recommended. Tour No. 4, the garden tour, spends the most time in the opulent gardens and around the extravagant Roman-themed swimming pool.
