Chain Bridge (Széchenyi lánchíd)

Adena diddit and says: A Modern Holocaust Museum Being as many of my ancestors who perished in the Holocaust were Hungarian, I felt it was very important to visit a Holocaust museum in Hungary. I vaguely remember my visit to this museum. It seemed a bit touristy (given that it was called the "museum of terror" and the building had TERROR stenciled in its roof overhang.) However, it was a quality museum for learning about the Holocaust. It was interesting to learn about how the Holocaust effected Hungary specifically. I don't remember specific exhibits, but I do remember crying at parts (though that's pretty usual for me visiting a Holocaust ...

Budapest Ferihegy International Airport
Adena diddit and says: Did it - Twice. Not on purpose. The first time my friend and I headed towards Budapest Ferihegy International Airport, we thought we were leaving the country to head to Croatia. We, admittedly, were running a little late -- the bus to the airport took a long time and we arrived about 30 minutes to our flight. We ran as fast as we could to the Sky Europe counter, hoping we could still board our plane. It turned out that the plan DEPARTED 30 MINUTES EARLY (who does that???)-- and there wouldn't be ano ...

State Opera House
Adena suggested: The Hungarian State Opera House (Hungarian: Magyar Állami Operaház) is a neo-Renaissance opera house located in central Pest, (a part of Budapest), in the 6th District (Terézváros) at Andrássy út 22. Designed by Miklós Ybl, a major figure of 19th century Hungarian architecture, the construction lasted from 1875 to 1884 and was funded by the city of Budapest and by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria-Hungary. The Hungarian Royal Opera House (as it was known then) opened to the public on the September 27, 1884. It is a richly-decorated building and is considered one of the architect's masterpieces. It was built in neo-Renaissance style, with elements of baroque. Orname ...

Árpád Bridge
Adena suggested: Árpád Bridge or Árpád híd is a bridge in Budapest, Hungary, connecting northern Buda (Óbuda) and Pest across the Danube. It is the northernmost public bridge of the capital and the longest bridge in Hungary, spanning about 2 km (1.24 mi) with the sections leading up to the bridge, and 928 m (0.58 mi) without them. It is 35.3 m (116 ft) wide with pedestrian and bicycle paths. At its Óbuda end is Flórián tér, Szentlélek tér (near the Main Square of Óbuda, the Vasarely and Kassák Museums). Margaret Island is connected to Árpád Bridge through an embranchment approxim ...

  • The first time my friend and I headed towards Budapest Ferihegy International Airport, we thought we were leaving the country to head to Croatia.

We, admittedly, were running a little late -- the bus to the airport took a long time and we arrived about 30 minutes to our flight. We ran as fast as we could to the Sky Europe counter, hoping we could still board our plane.

It turned out that the plan DEPARTED 30 MINUTES EARLY (who does that???)-- and there wouldn't be another plane to our destination in Croatia for another 3 days. (Yikes.) We ended up scheduling a flight to our second destination in Croatia 2 days later, and heading to a cute airport Bed & Breakfast for the night.

I'm actually really glad we got those extra two days in Budapest, though it was a bit unnerving at first. We had the entire trip planned out down to the details, and then our day in Split, Croatia and an extra day in Dubrovnik were gone. But by staying in Budapest, I got to see a lot more of the attractions that I missed the first two days. I didn't really enjoy the city on my first two days, so it was good that I was able to stay and change my mind about the place. Now I want to go back to see more!
