La Brea Tar Pits
The La Brea Tar Pits (or Rancho La Brea Tar Pits) are a famous cluster of tar pits located in Hancock Park in the urban heart of Los Angeles, California, United States. Asphalt (colloquially termed tar, which in Spanish is termed brea, see below) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years, forming hundreds of sticky pools that trapped animals and plants which happened to enter. Over time, the asphalt fossilized the remains. The result is an incredibly rich collection of fossils dating from the last ice age.
Tammy Watts diddit and says: This was an amazing place, my 2 kids loved it, especially the saber tooth cat skeleton/hologram when you first go in. Seeing the tar still bubbling up outside really gave a good idea of what things were like ten thousand years ago. The ongoing dig was also interesting to watch.

Venice Beach Boardwalk
JacQue diddit and says: One of my favorite places on earth! !! The BEST people-watching spot ever! Great shopping bargains and street vendors. Art, jewelry, clothing, cultural stuff, touristy stuff, hippy stuff, etc. etc. Great food stands. You can even get tatooed, pierced or braided here. Try the Sidewalk Cafe. Right in the middle of the action, they have great food, reasonable prices and a front-row seat for the street performers and the "show" that is the Venice Boardwalk!
