Martin Luther King was Martin Luther King, Jr. was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American civil rights movement. A human rights icon recognized as a martyr by two Christian churches, King became a civil rights activist early in his career in his role as a Baptist Minister. He led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott and helped found the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in 1957, serving as its first president. King's efforts led to the 1963 March on Washington, where King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech. There, he raised public consciousness of the civil rights movement and established himself as one of the greatest orators in U.S. history. Here are some places you can go to remember Martin Luther King Jr. on MLK Day and throughout the year.

  • it is a beautiful monument to what was a tragic end. it is built around the Lorraine hotel in Memphis where Dr. King was fatally shot. They have done a terrific job of creating an understanding of how he unified people. There is also the "bus" exhibit to help visitors understand Rosa Parks and the strength she had that day as well as a wonderful tribute on the first floor to all of the African American baseball players. If you are in Memphis -- this is a must-do (and of course, Graceland).
